The introduction to SHAKESPEARE is not an easy task. Sometimes the magic can use a little assistance! To make the works of Shakespeare accessible to all ages and levels of education, Cass Foster combines his experience as a professor emeritus of theatre, fight choreographer, and stage director to provide the Sixty-Minute Shakespeare series. Foster’s renditions of the timeless tales are not adaptations or modernizations, but rather judiciously condensed versions of the Bard's classics.

“I worked at the Folger Library and then The Shakespeare Theater at the Lansburgh in Washington, DC, years and years ago when I graduated from college and have performed in/worked on so many versions of this play. When my daughter’s school asked me to produce and direct their production I dove in and read so many versions of the play to find the right one for our high school students. I absolutely love your Sixty Minute Shakespeare version by Cass Foster. It perfectly captures the voice, comedy and heart of the Bard, is accessible and compelling, and we are going to have so much fun performing it!” ~ Jeanne Allgood

Testimonials

In The Sixty-Minute Shakespeare series, Professor Cass Foster carefully has abridged six of the most popular plays by the Bard to make them accessible for easy transference from page to stage. Although my review copy is of “Macbeth,” the other plays in the series include “Hamlet,” “Much Ado About Nothing,” “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” “Twelfth Night,” and “Romeo and Juliet.” In each, Foster provides frequent definitions to the more arcane verbiage as well as good advice on scenery and pacing, recommended websites, and a long list of common Shakespearean themes.

Coincidentally, I currently am teaching a theater class in which we are delving into “Hamlet.” When this book came across my review pile, I jumped into it with anticipation. I was not disappointed. Reading through this text, I became eager to stage a production of “Macbeth” with my young friends. Foster abbreviates the overall play to enhance the dramatic tempo of student productions while preserving the beauty of Shakespeare’s prose. Cass has done all the heavy lifting with the text for me, and now all I have to add to the pot are eager young actors and a director’s ample share of blood, sweat and tears. For good measure, I think we’ll throw in a “fillet of a fenny snake, in the cauldron boil and bake.” What is sure to be produced will be a child’s lifelong, deep appreciation for the work of William Shakespeare.

Quill says: The Sixty-Minute Shakespeare series will have teachers and students clamoring for the stage.

— Pamela Victor, Feathered Quill

“I loved this. It just made Shakespeare so accessible for everybody. It was quick and easy to follow. It took the hard work out of Shakespeare for those who are not quite as engaged as other and for more reluctant readers and students. This is a great play anyway so I knew I would enjoy it anyway. It give an insight into the play and also tips and tricks for stage performance also. I highly recommend it for classroom use and personal reading too.”

4 out of 5 stars.

Clara Carter, Educator

“Our group, the Woodland Shakespeare Club, founded in 1886, is on of the oldest still functioning Shakespeare clubs in the United States. One early practice of the original five founders of the club was to gather together to read the plays to each other.…we plan to recreate this original practice using the Sixty-Minute volume and dividing into small groups for reading and discussion.”

— Carol Lapsley, WSC Program Development Committee for 20-21

“The perfect compromise for readers wishing to enjoy the brilliance of a true master...”

— Marcia Berneger, The Muse Book Reviews

“Rather than retell, the series preserves the original play format and the Bard's language, while providing excellent footnotes to archaic words. It's a smart stepping stone to the real thing.”

— NEA Today

“An ideal alternative for those who lack the time to tackle the unabridged versions. . . the abridged versions offer the excitement of the Shakespeare tales, as well as the wonderful imagery in the prose and verse.”

— Trevor Cairney, Literacy, families and learning

“...chock-full of practical advice and production support. Providing young people with a positive Shakespeare experience will set the stage for a lifetime appreciation of the classics. It is the best gift we can give kids in an age of sound bytes!

— Marla Truini, Director of Drama/Outreach
